Well, I have finally managed to get my seed orders completed.  Ultimately I only needed to order 19 seed packets to add to my current “inventory”.  I have a few standards when it comes to the seeds that I use.  First, I won’t buy from anyone that hasn’t adopted the Safe Seed Pledge.  This is a voluntary pledge made by seed suppliers that puts them in compliance with The Safe Seed Initiative, The Council for Responsible Genetics.  Basically, suppliers vow to not buy, sell or trade or in any way distribute seeds that are known to be genetically modified.  Since genetically modified = Frankenstein, I prefer to try to avoid these.  This is better for the soil, the eco-system and me and my family.

I also look for suppliers that are not owned by Monsanto.  There is a TON of information regarding Monsanto available on the internet.  Essentially, Monsanto is a chemical company.  A chemical company that owns over 40% of the home gardening seed business.  Humm??  I think that is a bad idea. I have tried to not put my money into the Monsanto coffers but it can be a bit of a minefield.  Companies owned by companies owned by companies…..it can be complicated.  I have numerous reasons that I avoid Monsanto but we would be here a good long while if I listed them.

Finally, I look for suppliers that have an interesting mix of seeds available that include organic and heirloom choices.  Grow something that no one else in your neighborhood is.  Bright red carrots, deep purple green beans, nearly black tomatoes, multi-colored chard! Remind yourself that what is available at the grocery store is the smallest sample of what is available in the world.
