There is still time!

So here we are on August 1st.  You may be looking out at your garden and seeing some empty places.  Now is the perfect time to really maximize your garden’s potential and get another round of crops before you put it to bed for the winter.  What you plant now should be a bit more tolerant to cooler temperature and have a relatively short growing season. So take an inventory of what space is available and pull out that shoe box filled with leftover seed packets.

Any available space will benefit from some compost turned into the soil to replenish nutrients and organic matter.  Go visit your compost pile and grab up what is ready to go.

I will be planting spinach, kale, arugula and a variety of lettuces, peas, green beans, beets and carrots. I will try to squeeze in a few more cauliflower and broccoli plants too.  My family is loving the cucumbers so I will get a few more of them going.  We are not as wild about turnips and radishes but if you enjoy them, plant ‘em!

Here are a few more to consider:    Swiss chard, mustard greens, kohlrabi, green onion, mustard & collard greens.

There are a few techniques to extend the garden season into the cooler weather.  I will be setting up row covers and hoops over my raised beds in a few weeks so check back!
