Its a dirty job.

The compost pile has been needing some attention for awhile now. I have to admit, it is my least favorite job of gardening. I would rather weed-AND THAT is sayin’ something! Yet compost is the secret soil ingredient to a bountiful harvest so I have embraced this chore as a necessity. All of our fall leaves and kitchen scrapes go onto the compost pile and it really pays off. We have less garbage for pick up and a truly wonderful soil amendment for the garden beds.
So, today it began. My compost pile is contained by pallets lashed together by plastic zip ties. Fancy, eh? I cut open the right side and shoveled the compost over a screen positioned over my wheel barrow. After sifting 4 loads I added it to a new bed my husband built for me and topped off the place in the garden that I just harvested the garlic from. I am ready to plant something new there so the soil could us a nutrient boost.
I wish I had the steam to tackle the pile all at once but it is a dang hot day. I imagine an hour or two over the course of a week will get the job done.
